Languages are systems of sounds, gestures and written symbols which are used to encode and decode information.
Human spoken and written language are systems of symbols (lexemes) and the grammars (rules) by which the symbols are manipulated. Human language uses sounds to enable communication between people and symbols to codify information. There are thousands of human languages, but only a few popular contemporary languages are represented in this website.
Many people become interested in learning other languages beside their primary one at some point in their life. This may come about due to traveling, social interaction with people from other areas of the world, business needs or opportunities, or cultural immersion. Whatever the eason, if you've come here for help with spoken and written languages you've come to the right place!
Note: computer programming languages, sign language and mathematical formalisms are topics worthy of study, but are outside the scope of this website. Computer languages in particular were constructed from the same syntactic principles that written language has used for thousands of years, and offer a chance to study interesting grammars and linguistic constructs. However, we are focused on providing learning resources for a small number of commonly spoken and written languages - sorry!
